Root Canals

root canal

A root canal therapy is a dental procedure that removes an unhealthy pulp – nerve tissue and blood vessels, from the root of a tooth. It is a safe and effective way to cure an infection in the center of your tooth. With this procedure, you get to save your tooth as the pulp is not crucial for its function.

Endodontic therapy – root canal, usually becomes necessary when a tooth has either been traumatized by injury or when caries have reached the pulp chamber and infected the tissue. Depending on the level of complexity, root canal therapy can be performed by either a general dentist or an endodontist, a provider who specializes in this procedure.

When do you need endodontic therapy?

An infected tooth will not heal itself. It needs the attention of a dentist. If left untreated, it can cause a variety of illnesses and long-term health risks. Deep injury (fracture) or tooth decay can also lead to infection of the nerves and blood vessels inside the tooth. When this happens, it’s time for a root canal treatment.

Here are the steps of root canal treatment

  • Removing the infected tissues from the root of your tooth
  • Shaping and cleaning the root canal spaces
  • Filling the canals with safe material, most commonly gutta percha, a natural polymer made from latex from the Percha tree.

Our dentists at Kiss Dental are focused on relieving you of pain and treating your infected teeth. Root canal treatment might need more than one visit. After successful completion of endodontic therapy, the tooth is considered “dead,” as all the nerve tissue has been removed. Given this, teeth with root canals are more brittle than natural teeth and care should be taken to avoid fracture or further damage to the tooth. Depending on the condition of the tooth, a final restoration of either a filling or a crown will then be placed.
